At just 13 months old, Ellie Bowen faced a life-altering battle against necrotising fasciitis, a rare and destructive bacterial infection. While she survived the ordeal, it necessitated the amputation of her right leg. Now 17, the Caerphilly native has become the youngest member of the Welsh athletics squad preparing for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
For Bowen, her condition has always been a fact of life rather than a limitation. She found her path through sports, which helped her realize that her physical differences did not prevent her from competing alongside others. She will be participating in the seated shot put, fulfilling a long-held ambition to represent her country on the international stage.
Her talent was identified by Anthony Hughes, the performance director at Disability Sport Wales. After initial success in wheelchair racing, Bowen transitioned to throwing events. Even the interruption of the Covid-19 pandemic could not dampen her progress, as she returned to competition with immediate success. Her parents, who supported her through every challenge, remain incredibly proud of her resilience. Her father, Martin, even built a custom campervan to ensure she could reach various competitions. As she heads to her first major games, Bowen remains focused on performing well for her family and enjoying the experience of competing at the highest level.
