Eight Dead in Lagos-Ibadan Expressway Truck Pile-Up Near Kara Bridge
A devastating multiple-truck collision on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, near the Kara Bridge and outward Lagos, resulted in the confirmed deaths of at least eight people on Thursday morning.
The tragic accident, which occurred close to the Berger axis, involved several heavy-duty vehicles and caused widespread chaos. According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), one truck plummeted into the Kara River, while two others crashed and immediately burst into flames.
Further complicating the scene, another truck scattered its contents, cartons of biscuits, across the road, and a fourth container-laden truck struck a barrier, causing its cargo unit to fall into the river.
The Nigeria Police Force and LASTMA operatives swiftly mobilized to the site to manage the situation and coordinate emergency efforts, as thick black smoke was seen rising from the wreckage.
The deadly crash led to severe traffic congestion and major backlog across the expressway and adjoining routes, including Ogunnusi Road. Recovery and evacuation operations are currently underway, and authorities are urging motorists to remain patient as they work to clear the highway and restore normal traffic flow.
