Edo State authorities have shut down four poultry operations and one piggery for failing to comply with the State Environmental Sanitation and Pollution Management Law. Nosa Adams, the Commissioner for Environment and Sustainability, announced this action during a press briefing in Benin City on Wednesday, July 15, 2026. Adams highlighted that the 2025 environmental law now provides the necessary framework to curb unregulated activities that previously went unchecked.
The ministry has been active in enforcement, issuing 93 violation notices and prosecuting 30 offenders. Additionally, 230 facilities throughout Edo South have undergone environmental audits. Looking forward, the state is partnering with the Federal Government and the World Bank to construct environmental testing laboratories in Benin City, Irrua, and Auchi. These facilities will provide essential scientific support for Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, and Ondo states, improving pollution monitoring and regulatory oversight in the South-South region.
To further protect local water sources, the state has implemented new discharge standards for industrial facilities. The government also operates a weekly mobile court to address repeat offenders, while continuing to emphasize public awareness and advocacy regarding environmental standards.
