Ecclestone Sets New England Wicket Record at Historic Lord’s Test

Sophie Ecclestone became England’s top female wicket-taker across all formats during the historic first women’s Test match held at Lord’s, a day marked by honoring former cricket pioneers.

Sophie Ecclestone claimed the status of England’s leading wicket-taker across all formats during the inaugural women’s Test at Lord’s. By dismissing Sayali Satghare in the 73rd over, she reached 336 career wickets, surpassing the previous record held by Katherine Sciver-Brunt. Ecclestone finished the day with impressive figures of 3-68, helping to restrict India to 285 runs all out.

This landmark achievement occurred against a backdrop of historic celebration as the England and Wales Cricket Board honored female pioneers from the amateur era. Former players, including Enid Bakewell and Anya Shrubsole, participated in a pre-match bell-ringing ceremony to commemorate those who laid the foundation for the current generation of professional athletes.

Reflecting on the milestone, the 27-year-old Ecclestone described the day as a once-in-a-lifetime experience. She now sits third on the all-time international wicket-takers list, trailing only Deepti Sharma and Jhulan Goswami. Issy Wong also played a pivotal role, securing key wickets after a challenging start, highlighting the team’s resilience. Despite England finishing the day at 21-1 following the loss of Tammy Beaumont, the significance of playing at the Home of Cricket remained the primary theme for both the current squad and the legends observing from the stands.
