Rio Ferdinand praises Manchester United midfielder Mason Mount’s pre-season form

Rio Ferdinand has expressed optimism regarding Mason Mount’s recent pre-season performances, despite the midfielder facing increased competition for a starting role at Manchester United.

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has praised Mason Mount for his recent displays during the team’s pre-season tour. Mount joined United from Chelsea in 2023 for an initial £55 million, with potential add-ons totaling £5 million. His tenure at Old Trafford has struggled to meet expectations, as the midfielder has recorded only seven goals and two assists in 72 appearances. Persistent injury issues have also limited his availability, causing him to miss nearly 70 matches since his arrival.

However, the 27-year-old is now showing signs of a potential resurgence. He featured in all three of the club’s recent friendlies, logging minutes against Wrexham, Rosenborg, and Atletico Madrid while demonstrating improved form. Ferdinand highlighted these efforts on social media, posting that Mount appeared sharp on the pitch.

Mount faces a difficult challenge to secure a regular starting spot this year, as Manchester United has added further depth to their midfield. The club recently signed Andrey Santos from Chelsea for £48 million and triggered Youri Tielemans’ £35 million release clause from Aston Villa, intensifying the competition for playing time ahead of the 2026-27 campaign.
