Dustin Johnson ends major championship streak by withdrawing from Open qualifying

Dustin Johnson will sit out the Open Championship for the first time since 2009 after pulling out of final qualifying, ending his streak of 38 straight major starts.

Dustin Johnson, a two-time major champion, will not compete in this year’s Open Championship. This marks the first time he has missed the tournament since his 2009 debut. The 42-year-old had enrolled in final qualifying at Dundonald Links after failing to gain an automatic spot, but he has since been removed from the list without an official explanation.

Johnson, who transitioned to the professional circuit in 2007, has struggled to find consistency in majors recently, recording only one top-20 placement in his previous 15 attempts. His best performance at the Open remains a tie for second place back in 2011. This withdrawal halts his impressive run of 38 consecutive appearances in major championships, a streak that dates back to the 2017 Masters.

Although he currently competes on the LIV Golf tour, Johnson successfully made the cut in all three major tournaments he entered this season. The upcoming Open Championship is scheduled to begin on 16 July at Royal Birkdale.
