The Department of State Services (DSS) has launched an official probe into the actions of its staff members after activist Omoyele Sowore was sent to the Kuje Correctional Centre in Abuja. The agency acknowledged public unease regarding events at the Federal High Court on Monday, which included a confrontation between a custodial officer and security personnel.
Favour Dozie, the DSS Deputy Director of Public Relations, confirmed the investigation in a Tuesday statement. The agency noted that Sowore’s choice to ride in a DSS vehicle rather than a prison transport unit was an unconventional act now under scrutiny. The Director-General of the DSS has demanded an immediate review of the officers’ performance during these events.
The legal action against Sowore originated from an August 25, 2025, social media post where he critiqued President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The DSS stated they initially attempted a non-coercive resolution by requesting a retraction on September 4, 2025. The agency defended its record by citing previous judicial successes against individuals for defamatory claims and mentioning the illegality of Prof. Pat Utomi’s shadow cabinet.
Sowore is currently facing charges under the 2024 Cybercrimes Amendment Act. The DSS emphasized that it did not object to his bail on self-recognition and insisted that his detention resulted strictly from judicial directives. The agency reiterated its dedication to legal standards despite ongoing public scrutiny.
