Legal representatives for E Jean Carroll confirmed on Tuesday that she has received over $5 million from Donald Trump. This payment follows a jury’s decision three years ago that held the former president liable for sexual abuse and defamation in a civil lawsuit.
Roberta Kaplan, serving as legal counsel for Carroll, issued a brief statement expressing satisfaction that the jury-awarded damages have finally been paid. Although Trump’s legal team had sought to delay the transfer while pursuing an appeal to the Supreme Court, the presiding judge ordered the immediate release of the funds last week.
The controversy stems from an incident in the mid-1990s, where Carroll, a former magazine columnist, alleged that Trump assaulted her at a Manhattan department store. Later, in 2022, she sued him for defamation after he denied the incident on his social media platform, Truth Social. A New York jury ultimately sided with Carroll in 2023.
For the duration of the appeal process, the funds had been held in a court-supervised account. While Trump’s attorneys have publicly criticized the verdict, labeling the proceedings as politically motivated, the transfer of funds marks the conclusion of this phase of the litigation.
