Doctors Threaten Nationwide Strike As NMA’s 21-Day Ultimatum Nears Expiry
With just days left until the expiration of its 21-day ultimatum on July 23, the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has warned of a potential nationwide strike if the Federal Government fails to address its demands.
NMA President, Prof. Bala Audu, issued the warning in an interview on Sunday, emphasizing that the demands are crucial for the survival of the country’s healthcare system and the wellbeing of medical professionals.
The ultimatum, issued on July 2, stems from a controversial circular by the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC), which outlines revised allowances for medical and dental officers. The NMA rejected the circular, citing a breach of prior agreements and a lack of consultation.
“We’ve been clear about our position. If nothing is done by July 23, we may have no option but to initiate industrial action,” Audu said.
He described the provisions in the circular as “unilateral” and “unacceptable,” warning that such decisions undermine the morale and remuneration of doctors. The association insists that any policy impacting its members must result from mutual agreement.
Prof. Audu noted that although discussions have been held with top government officials including the Coordinating Minister of Health, Prof. Muhammad Pate, and other key stakeholders, progress has stalled due to the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, which disrupted scheduled meetings.
He stressed the urgency of reconvening talks within days, warning that failure to do so could trigger a strike.
“If stakeholders do not prioritize this issue after the mourning period, a walkout might be unavoidable,” he warned.
Backing the national stance, the Katsina State branch of the NMA, in a communiqué issued on Saturday, condemned the NSIWC’s June 27 circular and demanded its immediate withdrawal. The statement, signed by the state chairman, Dr. Muhammadu Sani, and secretary, Dr. Yahya Salisu, stated the branch could not guarantee uninterrupted healthcare delivery if the federal government fails to meet their demands.
