Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro’s health has worsened following recent surgery, according to his medical team.
Bolsonaro is currently in the intensive care unit at DF Star Hospital in Brasília, where doctors have flagged elevated blood pressure and deteriorating liver function as major concerns.
A new round of medical tests is underway, according to a statement shared Thursday on his official X account.
The surgery was related to lingering intestinal complications from a 2018 stabbing, which have led to multiple hospitalizations in recent years—including a colostomy bag removal in 2019 and treatment for intestinal blockage and abdominal pain.
His hospitalization came shortly after he experienced severe abdominal pain during a public event, just weeks before a court trial over an alleged attempt to overturn the 2022 election—charges Bolsonaro denies.
Despite his condition, Bolsonaro posted a photo from his hospital bed earlier this week, giving a thumbs-up and thanking supporters for their prayers.
His doctors say he will continue motor physiotherapy and preventive care for blood clots.
