Djed Spence seemingly avoids handshake with Thomas Partey

Viral footage shows England’s Djed Spence appearing to snub a handshake with Thomas Partey before a World Cup match marked by crowd protests against the midfielder.

Online video footage suggests that England defender Djed Spence declined a handshake from Ghana’s Thomas Partey during pre-match ceremonies in Boston. This incident occurred during a World Cup Group L fixture where Partey faced audible hostility from the crowd.

The Villarreal midfielder, formerly of Arsenal, has recently faced significant scrutiny. He previously missed Ghana’s opening game against Panama after being refused entry into Canada; officials stated he misrepresented his legal history regarding arrests. Partey, who has pleaded not guilty to several counts of rape and sexual assault involving four women, is set to go to trial next year.

During the match at Boston Stadium, the 33-year-old was targeted by jeers from English supporters whenever he gained possession of the ball. The Football Association confirmed they provided no specific instructions to players regarding the pre-match handshakes. Despite the controversy and his recent travel complications, Partey maintained he was prepared to compete against England.

United States Customs and Border Protection clarified that while they are informed of his pending legal case, Partey remains eligible for entry as he has not been convicted and holds a valid visa.
