Joe Schmidt has joined Ulster in a newly established position as a coach development advisor. The 60-year-old, who recently concluded his tenure as head coach of Australia following a victory against Italy, will focus exclusively on enhancing the province’s coaching pathway rather than working directly with the senior squad.
Ulster stated that Schmidt’s primary responsibility will be to foster the development of coaches throughout the region to create a more integrated and consistent coaching structure. Schmidt noted that he aims to add value to the province’s established rugby traditions by refining how coaches are prepared.
Widely recognized for his successful tenure with the Irish national team between 2013 and 2019, Schmidt secured consecutive Six Nations titles and a 2018 Grand Slam, along with historic victories over the All Blacks and South Africa. His background also includes serving as head coach for Leinster and an assistant role at Clermont.
Ulster general manager Rory Best, who played under Schmidt, described the appointment as a crucial component of the club’s long-term strategy. According to Best, the initiative seeks to support mentors at all levels, from grassroots school and club programs to those currently managing provincial pathway systems.
