Diego Forlan Named Interim Head Coach of Uruguay National Team

Former striker Diego Forlan takes over as interim head coach for Uruguay following the national team’s early elimination from the 2026 World Cup.

Uruguay has named former star forward Diego Forlan as the interim manager for the national squad. This decision follows the departure of Marcelo Bielsa, who stepped down after the team’s early exit during the 2026 FIFA World Cup group stage.

The Uruguayan Football Association confirmed the news on Sunday, aiming to refresh the team after a subpar tournament performance. Uruguay finished third in their group behind Spain, Cape Verde, and Saudi Arabia, failing to secure a spot in the knockout rounds with only two points total.

Forlan, 47, has signed a contract lasting until March 2027. Officials will evaluate his work at that time to determine whether he remains in the role for the future or if a permanent replacement is necessary. In addition to his senior team duties, Forlan will maintain his position as head coach for the Under-20 side as they prepare for the 2027 South American Championship.

As a player, Forlan is considered an icon of Uruguayan football. He famously earned the Golden Ball at the 2010 FIFA World Cup after leading his country to the semifinals. Throughout a distinguished club career, he played for teams including Manchester United, Atlético de Madrid, and Villarreal. He is now charged with revitalizing the national program as they look toward the next international cycle.
