Didier Deschamps travels home following mother’s passing

France head coach Didier Deschamps has left the national team camp to attend his mother’s funeral, with assistant Guy Stephan stepping in for their upcoming match against Norway.

Didier Deschamps, the head coach of the French national football team, has departed from his squad to return home to France after the passing of his mother. The French Football Federation (FFF) announced that the 57-year-old was informed of the news on Tuesday and received approval from FFF president Philippe Diallo to attend the funeral services.

While Deschamps is away, assistant coach Guy Stephan will assume leadership duties for the team. France is scheduled to play Norway in Boston this Friday, a match that will decide the leader of Group I. The team has already secured a spot in the knockout phase following victories against Senegal and Iraq.

Before his successful tenure as a manager, which began in 2012, Deschamps was a celebrated player who led France to victories in the 1998 World Cup and the 2000 European Championship. His coaching career has been equally notable, featuring a World Cup title in 2018 and a runner-up finish in 2022.
