Labour deputy leader Lucy Powell has confirmed that incoming Prime Minister Andy Burnham intends to uphold the pledges outlined in the party’s 2024 election manifesto. While maintaining these commitments, Burnham plans to pursue a more ambitious and bold approach to governance. Speaking on the BBC’s Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg, Powell characterized the upcoming leadership as a fresh start, designed to strip away distractions and refocus the government on economic recovery and the cost of living.
Burnham is scheduled to formally succeed Sir Keir Starmer on Monday following an audience with King Charles III. His appointment as party leader was confirmed last Friday after he emerged as the sole candidate, supported by 379 Labour MPs. In response, Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch criticized the transition, labeling Burnham a populist who lacks a clear agenda for the country. Badenoch argued that the nation requires a leader capable of making difficult choices rather than one focused on public opinion.
Despite calls from some opposition figures for a general election to establish a formal mandate, Powell reiterated that Burnham remains committed to the party’s original platform. She emphasized that he intends to honor plans for decentralizing power and challenging established interests. As an initial signal of this new direction, Burnham has already announced the cancellation of the Digital ID scheme. Powell defended this decision, noting that it saves government funds and allows resources to be better allocated toward primary priorities. Furthermore, reports indicate that the new administration plans to authorize additional oil and gas drilling in the North Sea, a move Powell described as a pragmatic shift in emphasis rather than a complete reversal of policy.
