David Olofu, former Benue State Commissioner for Finance and Budget under Governor Samuel Ortom (2015–2023), has formally exited the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
In a resignation letter dated June 30, 2025, and addressed to the chairman of Edikwu Ward 2 in Apa Local Government Area, Olofu stated that his decision was rooted in the constitutional right to freedom of association.
“This decision has become necessary as I move to exercise my right to freedom of association enshrined in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” he wrote, emphasizing that the move was made in the broader interest of his ward, local government, senatorial district, and Benue State at large.
Olofu, who once served as the Chairman of the Forum of State Commissioners for Finance in Nigeria (2019–2023), also held a key national role as Senior Technical Adviser to the Nigeria Governors’ Forum between 2023 and 2024.
Now positioned as the leader of a new political coalition within Apa Local Government, his departure from the PDP marks a significant shift in the local political landscape, particularly in Benue South.
