Dame Sarah Storey, the most decorated Paralympian in British history, has confirmed her immediate retirement from elite competition. The 48-year-old cyclist, who secured 30 Paralympic medals over the course of nine Games, will not participate in the 2028 Los Angeles event. Instead, she intends to dedicate her time to advancing the state of Para-sport.
Storey expressed concerns that the momentum gained following the London 2012 Games has faded, noting that many critical areas require improvement. She believes she can exert a more significant influence on the future of the sport by moving into advocacy roles rather than pursuing further medals. Having started her career as a swimmer before transitioning to cycling, she holds 19 Paralympic gold medals.
Reflecting on her 35-year tenure as an athlete, Storey noted her pride in the progress made within the sector. World Athletics president Lord Coe acknowledged her sentiments, agreeing that the industry must continue to progress to ensure past successes remain meaningful. The athlete, who earned her final eight titles after becoming a mother, remains convinced she could have defended her Paris titles but chose to prioritize structural change over personal accolades.
