Coroner determines death of 27-year-old Nigerian worker in the UK was suicide

A coroner has ruled that Beatrice Solomon, a 27-year-old Nigerian carer living in the UK, died by suicide following a year of mental health struggles.

A British coroner has confirmed that Beatrice Solomon, a 27-year-old Nigerian national, ended her own life. The mother of one was discovered unresponsive on March 4 at her residence on Norris Road in Stanfield.

Her husband, 40-year-old Damian Butler, found her after returning home from his delivery shift. Although emergency responders reached the site shortly after being notified, Solomon was declared dead at 6:21 p.m. Law enforcement officials confirmed that no other individuals were involved in the incident.

Solomon had relocated to Stoke-on-Trent from Nigeria in November 2023 to pursue a position as a carer under a skilled worker visa. She leaves behind a young son and several siblings.

During the inquest, Butler testified that his wife had suffered from mental health difficulties over the past year, attributing some of this stress to disputes with the Stoke-on-Trent City Council. He also noted that she had previously attempted suicide twice. Pathologist Dr. Jones concluded that the cause of death was oxygen deprivation.

Coroner Li Hammond-Naylor officially ruled the death a suicide, stating that evidence indicated the act had been premeditated. She concluded the hearing by offering her sympathies to the bereaved family.
