A heroic beachgoer is being credited with saving two children during a tragic event at West Mersea, near Colchester, that resulted in the deaths of a mother and her daughter. Witness Beverly Smit, 60, observed the anonymous man entering the sea multiple times to retrieve people caught in the water on Wednesday evening. The victims, 41-year-old Shally Rahman and her 15-year-old daughter Samiha, were attempting to rescue a seven-year-old boy when they were overcome by the conditions.
Essex Police confirmed the family, who were visiting from Barking, east London, were all related. While the mother and daughter passed away at the scene, the young boy was transported to the Royal London Hospital, where he continues to receive care. Several others involved in the incident were taken to different medical facilities for treatment. The tragedy reportedly began when the boy became stranded on a sandbank as the tide turned.
Local residents, staff from a nearby cafe, and an off-duty paramedic rushed to offer assistance, providing blankets and performing CPR. Leonie Powling, a 19-year-old cafe employee, expressed the community’s collective grief, noting how heartbreaking it was to witness the rescue efforts. Detective Chief Inspector Al Pitcher stated that investigators are currently interviewing witnesses to clarify the sequence of events and have encouraged anyone with information to step forward.
