The federal government has initiated a major restructuring of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), marking the first significant change to the 53-year-old institution since its 1973 inception. Hadiza Bala Usman, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on policy coordination, announced that the orientation process will now span six weeks, divided into three distinct two-week blocks focusing on civic leadership, financial and career development, and specialized vocational training.
Participants are now required to select one of 11 specific career streams during the registration process. This shift aims to better align individual academic backgrounds with the demands of the modern workforce. Furthermore, the deployment strategy will undergo adjustments to prioritize regional security conditions, ensuring participant safety remains a central concern.
Leadership of the organization will transition to a civilian head, though military personnel will maintain their role in providing security. Minister of Youth Development Ayodele Olawande also confirmed the introduction of modernized uniforms designed to evoke professionalism, while the traditional Passing Out Parade will be replaced by a formal graduation ceremony. Additionally, a new national certification system will be implemented to ensure consistent standards across all state camps.
