The Municipal Branch of the Nigeria Union of Teachers in the Federal Capital Territory has called on Minister Nyesom Wike to reclaim lands designated for teachers’ housing. The union claims that developers and a Chinese quarry firm have illegally seized parts of their properties located at Lugbe East Extension and Lugbe 1 Extension.
These parcels were officially secured and regularized back in 2012 for the purpose of building residential estates for educators. According to Union Secretary Percy Ndam, the organization has reached out to various government bodies and security agencies over the years, including the National Assembly and the EFCC, but the situation remains unresolved. Previous attempts to investigate the matter through an FCT committee failed to produce results, leaving the union frustrated by empty promises.
The union reports that some developers have even managed to secure documentation for portions of the land after the initial allocation to teachers. While legal proceedings against the quarry firm are ongoing, the case has been stalled by frequent delays. Union representatives emphasized that they remain committed to peaceful, legal channels to secure their property, which represents a vital welfare investment for their members. They are now urging Minister Wike to stop the unauthorized construction and hold the encroachers accountable.
