The Delta State Government has suspended the Commissioner for Works (Highway and Urban Roads), Hon. Izeze Rume Reuben, following claims linking him to an assault on the Governor’s Senior Special Assistant on Protocol, Simon Mudi, known as Temple. The incident occurred on July 26 at the PTI Conference Centre in Effurun.
Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Kingsley Eze Emu, confirmed the immediate suspension, noting it is intended to facilitate an impartial security investigation. The government emphasized that this action aligns with its dedication to upholding law and order, regardless of the status of those involved.
Alongside the administrative suspension, a High Court in Effurun has remanded the Commissioner after police arraigned him for his alleged role in the incident. He is currently facing charges related to attempted murder.
Human rights attorney Omes Ogedegbe noted that while the state’s investigation is a positive step, the legal process must remain fair. He reminded the public that a remand order does not constitute a conviction. Citing the 1999 Constitution, Ogedegbe stressed the importance of the presumption of innocence. He urged authorities to follow due process, ensuring that the commissioner is not punished before a formal guilty verdict is reached, while also noting that nobody is above the law.
