A massive wildfire currently ravaging the heathland along the Suffolk coastline has been officially designated a major incident. Approximately 90 firefighters from the Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service are battling the flames under challenging conditions after the fire ignited on Wednesday afternoon. The decision to label this a major incident stems from the fire’s significant scale and the technical difficulties posed by its rapid progression toward St James’s Church near Westleton Road.
Authorities have issued a strong warning for the public to stay away from the site and to keep household windows and doors closed to avoid smoke inhalation. The National Trust, which manages much of the affected nature reserve, is providing support to the firefighting efforts. Nearby areas, including the RSPB Minsmere nature reserve and locations such as Mount Pleasant and Westleton Walks, are currently restricted. Emergency crews are utilizing specialized gear, including quad bikes, drones, and off-road vehicles, to gain the upper hand. The blaze occurs amid an amber heat-health alert from the UK Health Security Agency covering several regions, including the east of England.
