Authorities at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi have detained a Chinese citizen, Zhang Kequn, for allegedly attempting to smuggle over 2,000 live queen garden ants out of Kenya.

The discovery was made during a routine security screening of his luggage, which was destined for China. Prosecutors believe Zhang is the primary coordinator of an international trafficking syndicate that was partially dismantled by Kenyan officials last year.

The ants, identified as Messor cephalotes (giant African harvester ants), were meticulously packaged: nearly 1,950 were found in specialized test tubes, while another 300 were hidden inside rolls of tissue paper.

These insects are protected under global biodiversity agreements due to their vital role in soil health and local ecosystems. While Zhang has not yet entered a formal plea, investigators claim he previously evaded capture by using an alias and a different passport during a similar crackdown in May 2024.

The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) highlighted that there is a surging demand for these ants in the exotic pet markets of Europe and Asia. This arrest follows a landmark 2024 case where four individuals were convicted for similar offenses.

A Kenyan court has granted prosecutors five days to detain Zhang while forensic experts examine his electronic devices to uncover further links to the harvesting network operating across the country.
