Caroline Garcia Announces Retirement From Tennis, Set To Play Final French Open
France’s Caroline Garcia, a former world number four and one of the country’s most accomplished tennis players, has announced she will retire from professional tennis. The upcoming French Open, which begins this weekend, will mark her final appearance at Roland Garros.
Garcia, 30, revealed the news in a heartfelt social media post on Friday, stating she has “a few tournaments left” before officially stepping away from the sport. Over the course of her career, she captured 11 WTA singles titles and was a French Open doubles champion, securing her legacy as one of France’s top tennis talents.
Her decision to retire marks the end of an era for French tennis fans, who will bid farewell to one of their homegrown stars on the courts of Paris.
“Dear tennis, it’s time to say goodbye.
“After 15 years competing at the highest level, and more than 25 years putting pretty much every second of my life into it, I feel ready to start a new chapter,” the 31-year-old said.
“My tennis journey hasn’t always been easy. Since my early days, tennis has been much more than just winning or losing. It’s been love or hate. Happiness or anger.
“But now, it’s time for something else. My body and my personal goals need it.
“Still, this is not over, not just yet. I have a few tournaments left,” she said.
The first will be at Roland Garros when the tournament starts on Sunday.
Caroline Garcia, once ranked world No. 4, will retire from tennis after a career that spanned more than a decade and earned her nearly $19 million in prize money. The 2022 WTA Finals champion announced that the upcoming French Open will be her final appearance at Roland Garros, with only “a few tournaments left” before she steps away from the sport for good.
Garcia’s standout year came in 2022, when she not only clinched the prestigious season-ending WTA Finals title second in significance only to the Grand Slams—but also captured her second French Open doubles title alongside compatriot Kristina Mladenovic. That same season, she reached the semi-finals of the US Open, her best singles performance at a Grand Slam.
Once ranked No. 4 in the world, Garcia has seen her position slip to 145th in the current WTA rankings. Despite the drop, her legacy includes 11 WTA singles titles, major doubles triumphs, and a lasting impact on French tennis. Her final bow at Roland Garros is expected to be an emotional sendoff on home soil.
