Former Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro is scheduled for his third court appearance in New York this Wednesday following his detention during a January US military operation. The 63-year-old and his wife, Cilia Flores, have remained at a Brooklyn correctional facility since their capture, facing multiple charges including drug trafficking and weapons offenses.
US forces executed a coordinated naval, air, and ground mission on January 3 to seize the couple from their Caracas residence. This operation effectively ended Maduro’s rule, which began in 2013. Following the event, former President Donald Trump stated that the military launched a major strike to apprehend the leader and his spouse.
The upcoming proceedings will primarily address procedural items. Although US sanctions initially prevented the payment of legal fees, authorities later permitted Venezuela to fund their defense after arguments were raised regarding the right to legal counsel. Maduro, who maintains his innocence, claims he is a prisoner of war. The charges against him include conspiracy involving narco-terrorism, cocaine importation, and the illegal possession of weaponry.
Current leadership in Venezuela has transitioned to former Vice President Delcy Rodriguez. Meanwhile, the United States maintains oversight of the nation’s oil exports, directing revenue into managed accounts.
