The United Nations is demanding an immediate cessation of hostilities throughout the Middle East, highlighting a sharp rise in violence and civilian deaths. The organization cited military actions involving Israel, the United States, and Iran, along with operations in Gaza, the West Bank, and southern Lebanon as primary drivers of the crisis.
According to the Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), Israeli military activity in Lebanon has resulted in 4,329 deaths and 12,233 injuries since March 2. Additionally, OCHA noted 349 fatalities and 229 injuries since the most recent, unstable ceasefire began. The humanitarian situation for minors is particularly dire; UNICEF reports that over 4,000 children have been killed or wounded in the region over the last five months.
In Gaza, UNRWA data indicates that between the October 2025 ceasefire and July 2026, 1,180 Palestinians were killed and 3,810 were wounded by Israeli forces. Blockades on essential goods have grounded more than half of UNRWA’s vehicle fleet, disrupting operations for 62 water wells. Meanwhile, in the occupied West Bank, 1,122 Palestinians—including 246 children—have been killed in conflicts since October 2023, with 76 deaths recorded since the start of 2026.
Abdul Fofana, UNICEF’s acting regional director, condemned the loss of children in areas meant to be secure, citing a recent incident on Qeshm Island where a toddler and their parents were killed. UN Secretary-General António Guterres has called for an end to the fighting, emphasizing the necessity of open maritime routes in the Strait of Hormuz and Bab al-Mandab. The UN warns that the ongoing instability threatens global trade, pushes up energy and food costs, and exacerbates risks of widespread poverty and famine.
