Cameron Norrie endured a surprising first-round exit at Wimbledon, falling in a grueling five-set match to qualifier Michael Zheng. This loss marked a challenging start for the British contingent on the tournament’s opening day. As the sole British seed remaining in the singles events following Emma Raducanu’s late withdrawal, Norrie’s defeat was particularly significant. Despite leading at several points, the world number 29 was overcome by the American after four hours of play, ending with a final score of 6-7 (7-9), 6-2, 6-7 (2-7), 6-3, 7-6 (10-4). This result was the first time Norrie has exited at the opening stage of Wimbledon since 2018.
Norrie was one of six British players to be defeated during the first day of competition, a tally that followed the pre-tournament withdrawal of Jack Draper due to injury. Among the other matches, Harriet Dart put up a valiant fight against Jelena Ostapenko, pushing the former French Open champion to three sets before ultimately losing 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. Additionally, 17-year-old Mika Stojsavljevic was defeated by Belinda Bencic, while Grand Slam debutants Felix Gill, Max Basing, and Alicia Dudeney all suffered losses in their respective opening matches.
