Buba Galadima, a prominent figure in the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has spoken out in support of a potential political coalition between the North and the South-East for the 2027 general elections. During an appearance on Arise Television’s Prime Time, he addressed the backlash directed at those endorsing a ticket featuring Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso.
Galadima characterized the criticism as stemming from historical ignorance. He pointed out that Northern and South-Eastern political cooperation has deep roots, dating back to the collaboration between the Northern People’s Congress and the National Council of Nigerian Citizens during the era of independence. He noted that leaders like Ahmadu Bello and Nnamdi Azikiwe previously worked together to secure power from colonial rule, a period of unity that he argues was unfairly shattered by the 1966 military coup rather than by civilian leaders.
Reflecting on the internal political friction, Galadima rejected accusations that supporting an Igbo candidate is inherently problematic. He specifically challenged supporters of Atiku Abubakar, noting that Atiku has previously partnered with several Igbo political figures, such as Ben Obi and Peter Obi. Galadima questioned the hypocrisy of those who criticize the proposed North-South-East alliance while simultaneously disregarding their own political history with such candidates.
