Boko Haram operative condemned to death for 2015 Maiduguri assault

A Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced Boko Haram member Alkali Yarima to death for his role in the 2015 Maiduguri attacks, along with several other prison sentences for terrorism-related crimes.

A Federal High Court in Abuja has issued a death sentence by hanging to Alkali Yarima, also recognized as La’ari, for his involvement in the 2015 terrorist strikes against Maiduguri, Borno State. Justice James Omotosho presided over the case and found Yarima guilty of seven terrorism-related counts initiated by the Federal Government.

Regarding the 2015 assault on Maiduguri, the judge ordered the death penalty. Furthermore, Yarima received a life sentence for undergoing military and weapons training to facilitate terrorism. Additional penalties included 35 years for the first count, 30 years for the fifth count, and 10-year terms for the second, third, and fourth counts respectively.

Court records indicate Yarima was a resident of Mafa Local Government Area and belonged to the banned Boko Haram sect between 2009 and 2015. Prosecutor Rotimi Oyedepo, SAN, had charged the defendant with offenses including accepting the ideologies of the group’s late founder, Mohammed Yusuf, and seeking tactical weapons training abroad.

The legal proceedings, initially held at Kainji in Niger State, ultimately concluded in the Abuja division of the Federal High Court.
