Bedford rail collision impacts travel through Thursday

Rail travel between London and Bedford will remain disrupted until Thursday following a deadly collision involving two East Midlands Railway trains that left one dead and dozens hospitalized.

Network Rail has stated that train services between London and Bedford will face significant delays through Thursday following a fatal collision labeled a tragic, isolated event. The accident occurred on Friday at approximately 17:15 BST, when two East Midlands Railway (EMR) trains bound for London St Pancras struck each other near Bedford, resulting in the death of one train driver and injuries to roughly 100 passengers. As of the latest update, 28 individuals remain hospitalized, with nine listed in critical condition.

East Midlands Railway halted all services to and from London St Pancras for the weekend. Thameslink has advised commuters to avoid travel unless absolutely necessary. Because of scheduled maintenance work, the lines were already set to be closed over the weekend. Starting Monday, EMR will offer one train per hour on select routes, but operations will terminate at Bedford, leaving no rail connection to the south. Mark Budden, the East Midlands route director for Network Rail, confirmed that further updates will follow as recovery efforts progress and the safety of the line is reassessed.

British Transport Police officially classified the crash as a major incident. Eyewitnesses aboard the trains described the experience as terrifying, with reports of passengers being thrown from their seats and carriages filling with smoke. Multiple survivors compared the intensity of the impact to an explosion, noting the prevalence of blood and severe injuries among those on board.
