Australian Sensation Gout Gout Beats Usain Bolt’s Under-20 Record
Eighteen-year-old Australian sprinter Gout Gout has achieved a historic milestone by breaking the 20-second barrier in the 200 metres, clocking a world-class time of 19.67 seconds. During the final day of the Australian Athletics Championships in Sydney on Sunday, April 12, 2026, Gout not only secured the national title but also eclipsed the time set by legendary sprinter Usain Bolt at the same age.
Gout’s performance is being hailed as the new World Under-20 record, as it officially betters the 19.69-second mark set by Erriyon Knighton in 2022. While Knighton previously ran a 19.49, that specific performance was never ratified as a world record, making Gout’s 19.67 the new official global standard for his age group. Crucially, his time also outpaces Usain Bolt’s best 200m performance at age 18, which was 19.93 seconds recorded in 2004.
The race showcased unprecedented depth in Australian sprinting, marking the first time two Australians have broken the 20-second barrier in the same race:
-
Gout Gout (1st): 19.67 seconds — A personal best and new Oceania senior record.
-
Aidan Murphy (2nd): 19.88 seconds — A significant personal best that also dipped under the previous national record.
-
Calab Law (3rd): 20.21 seconds.
Gout maintained his composure through a challenging, blustery day in Sydney. Despite an autumn chill, he utilized a legal tailwind of +1.7 m/s to finally secure an official sub-20-second mark. He had previously run 19.84 seconds in 2025, but that effort was invalidated for record purposes due to excessive wind assistance.
The young sprinter has confirmed he will skip the upcoming Commonwealth Games to prioritize the World Under-20 Championships in Oregon this August. Having already matched the pace required for an Olympic bronze medal in recent major games, Gout’s progression from a 20.02 personal best to 19.67 suggests he is now a legitimate contender on the senior global stage.
