An Australian aviation firm successfully completed a challenging midwinter mission to evacuate a US expedition member from Antarctica. Skytraders performed the rescue at McMurdo Station during extreme conditions, including total darkness and temperatures reaching -43C.
Following an urgent medical request, the team converted an Airbus A319 into a specialized air ambulance within one day. Although weather concerns delayed departure for 12 hours, the aircraft eventually departed from Hobart, Tasmania. Captain Al Wallach landed the plane on an icy runway, noting that the environment tested the limits of even the most capable aircraft.
The patient was safely flown to Christchurch, New Zealand, for medical treatment and is reportedly making a good recovery. According to Deputy Chief Executive Duncan Mackay, this operation occurred closer to the winter solstice than any previous civilian flight of this nature. The mission required coordination across meteorologists, flight crews, and medical staff to manage the harsh Antarctic environment.
