The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has granted 20 of its local chapters permission to issue 14-day ultimatums to their administrations. This move signals a potential strike due to the federal government’s failure to properly execute the 2025 agreement between the two parties.
This resolution emerged during the National Executive Council meeting conducted at the University of Abuja on August 8 and 9, 2026. ASUU President Christopher Piwuna stated that the union is deeply dissatisfied with the irregular execution of the 2025 deal and the government’s inability to provide the required financial subventions. Furthermore, the union criticized the leadership of various state-run universities for failing to adopt the agreed-upon terms.
As a result, the national leadership has empowered specific branches to begin formal strike preparations after the two-week warning period concludes. The 20 affected institutions include Nasarawa State University, Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, University of Medical Sciences Ondo, Gombe State University, Plateau State University, Adekunle Ajasin University, Ambrose Alli University, Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology, Abia State University, University of Education and Entrepreneurship, Emmanuel Alayande University of Education, Kaduna State University, Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology, Northwest University Kano, Enugu State University of Science and Technology, Imo State University, Niger Delta University, University of Africa, Bayelsa Medical University, and Taraba State University.
