Aston Villa have secured the transfer of Joao Gomes from Wolves in a transaction valued at £38 million. The 25-year-old Brazilian midfielder moved for an initial fee of £34 million, with an additional £4 million dependent on future performance targets.
Gomes departed Wolves’ training base in Portugal on Thursday to undergo medical assessments and finalize his contract at Villa Park, choosing Villa over interest from Atletico Madrid. This signing follows Villa’s recent record-breaking acquisition of Johan Manzambi from Freiburg for over £50 million. The club is bolstering its midfield options following the news that Amadou Onana will remain sidelined until next year due to a severe knee injury sustained during the World Cup.
During his tenure at Wolves, Gomes participated in 130 matches and scored seven goals after arriving from Flamengo in 2023. He played 41 times for the team during their final-place finish in the Premier League last season.
