Tensions between Iran and Israel soared to a devastating new height on June 19 as Iran launched a ballistic missile that struck Israel’s main southern hospital, Soroka Medical Center, in Beersheba. The impact left “extensive damage” in its wake and injured at least 32 people, according to hospital officials. Authorities have urged civilians to avoid the facility as emergency teams assess the wreckage.

The Soroka Medical Center, a critical institution with over 1,000 beds serving nearly a million people in Israel’s south, now lies partially crippled.

The Iranian strike came in immediate response to Israel’s bombing of Iran’s Arak heavy water reactor—one of the cornerstones of Tehran’s nuclear infrastructure. Though Iranian state media claimed there was “no radiation danger,” the reactor was evacuated, and state broadcasters reported that surrounding civilian areas remained untouched.

Thursday’s crossfire marked the seventh consecutive day of aerial strikes by Israel, which previously hit Iran’s Natanz enrichment site, centrifuge facilities in Tehran, and the Isfahan nuclear complex. Iran has responded with roughly 400 missiles and hundreds of drones since the onset of the escalation—attacks that have killed at least 24 people in Israel and wounded hundreds.

The toll on the Iranian side has been significantly higher. A U.S.-based Iranian human rights group reports that at least 639 people have been killed, including 263 civilians, with over 1,300 more wounded. Among the dead are high-ranking Iranian generals and nuclear scientists, many reportedly targeted in precision Israeli strikes.

Despite the ongoing violence, Israel has begun easing some internal restrictions—an indication that the intensity of Iran’s barrages may be slowing. Still, as fresh salvos continue to rain down, residents in both nations remain on high alert.
