Army recruits accused of attacking UNIOSUN students in Osogbo

New Nigerian Army recruits are accused of raiding student hostels at UNIOSUN, resulting in physical violence, theft, and allegations of sexual assault.

Students at the Osun State University, Osogbo campus, faced a frightening night on Monday when personnel newly recruited by the Nigerian Army allegedly attacked student housing. Reports indicate that these recruits, linked to the Army Depot in Osogbo, began their night by visiting local entertainment spots before targeting the student community.

Witnesses stated that the soldiers harassed young men, demanding unauthorized bank transfers. The situation turned violent as the recruits reportedly raided approximately 20 hostels, such as Cristalag and Kings and Queens. Students reported being subjected to physical beatings, with some female students alleging sexual assault and forced stripping. Many students also reported the theft of mobile phones and other personal belongings.

UNIOSUN Vice-Chancellor, Professor Clement Adebooye, expressed strong condemnation of the violence, labeling the actions as horrific and the perpetrators as unfit for civil society. Furthermore, Josiah Adeyemo, the NANS Zone D Coordinator, urged President Bola Tinubu and the Chief of Army Staff to conduct a swift investigation and hold the individuals accountable. As of the time of this report, the Nigerian Army has not provided an official comment regarding these allegations.
