The Argentine Football Association (AFA) is investigating a suspected cyber security breach after unauthorized emails surfaced from their official accounts. The messages, which appeared following Argentina’s 3-2 comeback victory against Egypt in the World Cup round of 16, criticized the officiating of the match.
During the game in Atlanta, Egypt initially led 2-0 thanks to goals from Yasser Ibrahim and Mostafa Zico. Argentina staged a late rally with scores from Cristian Romero, Lionel Messi, and Enzo Fernandez to secure a quarter-final spot against Switzerland. Post-match, Egypt manager Hossam Hassan complained of perceived bias and unfair treatment toward the defending champions.
Reports from the news outlet La Calle suggested that emails sent from an AFA account claimed the match was marred by corrupt officiating. AFA officials believe these messages were not authorized and may have been sent by hackers of Egyptian origin. The organization has advised the public to ignore suspicious communications from their account while they implement security measures to resolve the situation.
