Anthony Joshua keeps busy to avoid processing grief over friends’ deaths

Anthony Joshua prepares for his first fight since a tragic car accident in Nigeria claimed the lives of his close friends and staff members, stating he is not yet ready to fully confront the grief.

Two-time world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua says he is not yet prepared to fully process the loss of two close associates as he prepares for his upcoming match. Sina Ghami, his longtime rehabilitation coach, and fitness trainer Latif Ayodele were killed in a vehicle collision near Lagos, Nigeria, on December 29, 2026. Joshua was present in the vehicle during the incident and sustained minor injuries.

The 36-year-old fighter is set to face Kristian Prenga this Saturday. Joshua explained that he manages his grief by staying active, noting that pausing to reflect would make the reality too difficult to face right now. This match marks his return to the ring following a knockout victory over Jake Paul shortly before the accident occurred.

Regarding his upcoming performance, Joshua expressed a mix of determination and nerves. He aims to make his team proud while maintaining focus on his professional responsibilities. The athlete remains committed to his career trajectory, with potential future plans including a high-profile bout against Tyson Fury later in the year, provided both fighters succeed in their respective upcoming matches. Joshua emphasized that he is currently solely focused on his bout with Prenga before considering any future challenges.
