Following his formal audience with King Charles III at Buckingham Palace, the 56-year-old leader signaled a shift toward leftist policies and announced his ambition for a decade-long strategy to address the nation’s rising living costs.
Upon entering Downing Street, Burnham conducted international diplomacy by speaking with US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. During these discussions, he emphasized the UK’s continued focus on security and its ongoing support for Ukraine against Russian aggression. Within his own administration, Burnham appointed John Healey as the new finance minister, Ed Miliband as foreign secretary, and Angela Rayner as a key member of the executive team. Additionally, Wes Streeting was named defense minister, while Shabana Mahmood retained her post as interior minister to continue her work on asylum reforms.
Burnham’s primary agenda includes decentralizing national power, re-industrializing the economy, and eliminating homelessness, a goal he previously pursued as the mayor of Greater Manchester.
