The Anambra State Police Command has officially brought 12 suspects before the Gender Magistrate Court in Awka on July 8, 2026. These individuals face diverse charges including rape, child abuse, and defilement. Police spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga noted that the legal proceedings align with the department’s mandate to safeguard children and women from harm.
Among the accused, Chima Onyeanuna, Emeka Muo, and Okafor Chibundu face charges regarding the kidnapping and defilement of a 14-year-old in Nanka. In another matter, Ndubuisi Ikechebelu, Udogu Kennedy, Nnamah Christopher, and Chinecherem Emmanuel stand accused of repeatedly raping a 19-year-old, which led to her pregnancy. Additionally, Chukwudi Ugwu Jeremiah was charged with the defilement of an 11-year-old in Awka.
The court also addressed cases involving child cruelty. Charity and Chidiere Anakwe were arraigned for allegedly assaulting their 12-year-old house help. Meanwhile, Chukwudi Joseph faces allegations of assaulting a minor in Ozubulu, and Chibuike Agu is accused of defiling a 13-year-old in Fegge. Following their appearance, the magistrate ordered the suspects held at the Awka Correctional Centre.
The police command emphasized its firm stance against gender-based violence and child maltreatment. Authorities pledged to thoroughly investigate these crimes and ensure that those responsible face appropriate legal consequences.
