Human rights advocate and Nigeria Democratic Congress member, Aisha Yesufu, recently suggested that the Nigerian public has moved past the details of former military leader Sani Abacha’s passing. Instead, she emphasized that citizens are focused on tracking down the national assets allegedly stolen during his regime.
Yesufu, who co-convened the BringBackOurGirls initiative, issued this response on the social platform X after a former Department of State Services official, Dennis Amachree, provided details regarding Abacha’s death in his memoir, DSS @40: My Journey Behind the Shield. Amachree, who served as an Assistant Director of Operations and Intelligence, claimed the former head of state died from a heart attack during an intimate encounter at the Presidential Villa in 1998.
Despite the specific allegations in the book about the timing and circumstances of the event, Yesufu’s statement prioritized the unresolved issue of missing government funds over the private life of the late dictator.
