Aimee Barrett-Theron, a prominent international rugby referee, has stepped away from her duties after receiving a breast cancer diagnosis. The 39-year-old South African official, who holds the record for the most appearances as a female Test referee with 52 matches, shared that her condition is treatable. She is currently undergoing a medical plan with a specialized team with the aim of returning to the pitch within a few months.
The Cape Town native discovered the illness during a self-examination and urged others to remain vigilant about their health. Barrett-Theron recently officiated the South Africa A versus Zimbabwe match and was previously part of the officiating team for the 2025 Women’s Rugby World Cup final. She gained widespread public attention in 2024 for her calm handling of an Under-20 Six Nations match where she famously told team captains, “I’m not mad, I’m just really disappointed.”
South African Rugby Union president Mark Alexander praised Barrett-Theron for her resilience as a trailblazer in the sport. He expressed confidence that she will tackle her recovery with the same focus and determination she has shown throughout her distinguished career. The union has extended its support, stating they look forward to her eventual return to officiating.
