African nations exit 2026 World Cup following Morocco defeat

With Morocco’s quarter-final loss to France, the 2026 World Cup no longer features any teams from Africa.

Morocco has been knocked out of the 2026 World Cup after a 2-0 loss to France in the quarter-finals. This result marks the end of all African participation in the tournament.

As the final remaining African squad, the Atlas Lions had enjoyed a strong run. They began their campaign with a 1-1 tie against Brazil and a 1-0 win over Scotland. After defeating Haiti 4-2, they finished second in Group C. Their knockout stage journey included a penalty shootout victory over the Netherlands and a decisive 3-0 win against co-host Canada in the last 16.

Ten African nations initially qualified for the competition. Egypt was the only other side to reach the round of 16, falling 3-2 to Argentina. In total, nine African countries advanced to the round of 32: Algeria, Cape Verde, DR Congo, Egypt, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Morocco, Senegal, and South Africa.
