Nigeria has reached a significant milestone in sports administration following the election of Adeyinka Samuel as President of the Commonwealth Fencing Federation (CFF). According to an official statement, the election took place during the federation’s Annual General Meeting at Rugby School Nigeria in Lagos this past Saturday.
Samuel emerged victorious after securing 14 votes, surpassing the six votes cast for the incumbent, Marie-France Dufour. This appointment marks a historic shift, as Samuel becomes the first Nigerian and the first African to lead the organization, breaking a tradition previously dominated by leaders from Australia, Canada, and Scotland.
Expressing his gratitude, Samuel stated that he views this new role as a major responsibility. He aims to expand the reach of fencing across the Commonwealth, fostering a more inclusive environment for athletes. The election occurs concurrently with the Senior and Veteran Commonwealth Fencing Championships in Lagos, which features participants from over 20 nations. Notably, this competition introduces medal status for Under-23 and wheelchair events for the first time.
Delegates lauded Samuel’s transition from an elite athlete to a transformative leader. During his tenure as head of the Nigeria Fencing Federation, he oversaw the successful hosting of African Championships, international Junior World Cups, and the first Senior Commonwealth Fencing Championships held on African soil.
