ADC Warns of APC Interference in INEC’s 2027 Election Preparations

The ADC has accused the APC of exerting heavy pressure on INEC ahead of the 2027 elections, urging Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan to safeguard the commission’s independence.

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has claimed that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is struggling under significant influence from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) as the nation looks toward the 2027 general elections. Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the National Publicity Secretary for the ADC, detailed these concerns during an interview with The Sun, noting that the electoral body is currently struggling to balance its autonomy against political demands.

Abdullahi stated that INEC remains conflicted, oscillating between yielding to the ruling party and attempting to assert its independence. He expressed empathy for INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan, emphasizing that the burden of this pressure extends beyond the individual to the integrity of the institution itself. According to the ADC spokesperson, both the electoral commission and the judiciary are undergoing a critical test of their commitment to the Nigerian Constitution and the public interest.

The ADC official urged Prof. Amupitan to prioritize his legacy, reminding him that historical judgment awaits. Abdullahi maintained that the current administration will eventually vacate office, leaving the electoral chairman to decide whether his tenure will be recorded with integrity or dishonor.
