Minister of Works, David Umahi, has reassured the public that the 700-kilometre Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway will be completed as planned. During an inspection of the construction progress in the Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State, Umahi dismissed critics, labeling their skepticism as jealousy toward President Bola Tinubu’s ambitious infrastructure agenda.
Providing a progress update, the minister noted that the 7.47km stretch from Victoria Island to Elepe village is finished, while the 50km section from Lagos to the Ogun border has reached 70 percent completion. Additionally, sections 3A and 3B are 30 percent complete, and work is advancing on sections spanning through Ogun, Ondo, and Akwa Ibom states.
Addressing concerns raised by figures such as Donald Duke, Umahi maintained that the project is a long-standing necessity now made possible by the current administration. Regarding claims of project diversion for private interests, the minister clarified that engineering challenges, specifically deep peat deposits in the soil, necessitated route adjustments to ensure structural integrity. He praised the construction team for their diligence and reaffirmed that the project remains a top priority for the government.
