ADC Labels 139 Million Nigerians in Poverty as Tinubu’s True Performance Metric

The ADC has urged President Tinubu to consider resigning, citing a World Bank report that places 139 million Nigerians below the poverty line.

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has suggested that President Bola Tinubu should step down instead of pursuing another term. This demand follows a recent World Bank assessment indicating that 139 million Nigerians currently fall below the national poverty line.

National Publicity Secretary Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi stated that the report, showing 60 percent of the populace living in poverty, serves as a direct indictment of the administration’s current economic strategies. The party contends that while the government often touts metrics like higher revenue and foreign reserves, these figures fail to reflect the actual hardships faced by the public.

The ADC explicitly stated that having 139 million citizens in poverty and 17 million facing starvation represents a catastrophic failure. They argue that temporary handouts and palliative measures are ineffective solutions to systemic hunger. Instead, the party advocates for lowering energy costs, securing agricultural zones, and enhancing irrigation and farm inputs to boost food production.

Furthermore, the ADC emphasized that economic success should be gauged by the well-being of the population rather than macroeconomic data. They asserted that until the number of hungry families declines, any government claims of economic progress will remain disconnected from the reality of the people.
