Accord Party requests removal of Osun Police Chief due to election-related violence

The Accord Party is calling for the removal of the Osun State Commissioner of Police, citing a lack of response to political violence and the killing of a teenager ahead of the upcoming governorship election.

The Accord Party has officially petitioned Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun to remove Ibrahim Gotan, the Commissioner of Police in Osun State. The party cites rising political violence and recent fatalities occurring in the lead-up to the August 15, 2026 gubernatorial election.

Joseph Omorogbe, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, issued a statement detailing that repeated complaints to the police and the Department of State Services regarding attacks on members have been ignored. The party claims that despite reporting vandalism of their offices and physical assaults on supporters in Osogbo and Ede, no suspects have been apprehended.

A major point of contention is the death of 14-year-old Ezekiel Olapade. The teenager was fatally shot in Ilobu on June 21, 2026, during a violent clash between rival political factions. The Accord Party labeled the event inhumane and a clear sign of deteriorating safety in the region.

The party is now calling on President Bola Tinubu and other high-level security officials to intervene immediately. They argue that the current state police leadership has failed to maintain order, and they fear that persistent intimidation will ruin the integrity of the upcoming election. The party maintains that political goals should not result in loss of life and is urging all parties to engage in peaceful campaigning.
