Irish musician Glen Hansard, known for his work with the band The Frames and his appearance in The Commitments, has died following a motorcycle accident in Dublin. He was 56 years old.
Hansard gained international recognition in 2007 when he secured an Academy Award for Best Original Song for the track Falling Slowly, written for the film Once. Born in Dublin in 1970, he began his career as a street performer before transitioning into acting and a successful musical career.
Authorities are requesting assistance from any witnesses regarding the single-vehicle collision, which occurred on Lower Road in Lucan early Tuesday morning. Emergency responders were alerted to the scene just before 04:30 local time.
Beyond his film work, Hansard was a member of the duo The Swell Season and maintained a steady solo career, earning a Grammy nomination for his 2016 album, Didn’t He Ramble. He is survived by his three-year-old son.
